The England White ball Captain Joss Buttler resigned from the captaincy after his team's poor performance in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Earlier today, Joss Buttler announced his resignation at a press conference. The England team is currently under immense criticism from the media and former players due to their dismal show at the mega event.
The English team has now lost 8 out of their last 9 matches that they have played in 2025. In the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, England lost their 1st match against Australia despite setting a huge total of 351 runs. Australia comfortably chased down the total in the 47th over as English bowlers looked toothless against the Aussies. In the 2nd match, Afghanistan set the total of 326 for the English team, which they could not chase down as they lost the match by 8 runs, despite Joe Root's great knock of 120. As he couldn't find enough support from the other end. Almost all the English batters got start, but they couldn't convert it to big ones.
The major reason behind his resignation is that the English team couldn't perform well in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Their early exit from the event led Joss Butler to think again about his leadership skills, which he thought were not good enough. As he said earlier today, " I think this is the best decision for me and my team also. I hope whoever will come will take the team along with Bazz to where it needs to be. I will lead England against South Africa for the final time in their last match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. It was a great honour to lead my country at the International level. Although there is too much disappointment now, still I am thankful to the management for providing me privilage to lead my Country".
Brendon Macculum said, " It is quite disappointing to see Joss resigning as captain of England team. He is a fine player and leader. People can't forget the English Team's heroics under his captaincy in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. It will go down as a master piece in his legacy. It is quite unselfish of Joss Buttler to leave his captaincy to someone else. We all know how much he has invested in cricket in recent years. He is a great player and our big match winner; we will look at the roles to get maximum output from him.
England team's Managing Director, Rob Key, said, "We are grateful to Joss. It was an amazing journey with him; he always accepted challenges gleefully. He was the centre figure for our success in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. We are expecting him to be back to his best soon."
England team's CEO Richard Gould said: "We are thankful for Joss's contributions to England white ball team as a captain and leader. Under his captaincy, England became world champions in the T20 World Cup 2022. During his tenure, he was a role model on and off the pitch".
"Joss is one of the best white ball players in the world right now. I still remember when he 1st came as a youngster in Somerset. I am lucky enough to have followed his career from the start, and we are expecting to see him in England colours for a few more years".
English players couldn't handle spin in the subcontinent conditions, and they had selected fast bowlers who were all one-dimensional. They were lacking bowlers who have variations and the ability to get regular wickets in the subcontinent. Their key batters could not perform well in the subcontinental conditions, except Joe Root. Harry Brook, Joss Butler, and Liam Livingstone all struggled there.
England's Preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy were also not good enough as they lost 7 out of their 8 games against India. They were clueless against spin throughout the Subcontinent tour.
Joss Buttler replaced Eoin Morgan as England's Captain in 2022 and made an immediate impact as England won the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia after beating Pakistan in the final. But soon after that, the English team's performance in white ball declined significantly, resulting in their dismal show in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, ICC T20 World Cup 2024, and ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Joss Buttler captained England in 94 matches where they won 44 and lost 46 matches. England's vice-captain, Harry Brook, is an early favourite to be the successor of Joss Buttler as England's Captain. Although Brendon Macculam said that "it is not decided still who will replace him".
Joss Buttler's resignation will have a huge impact on the English team going forward since they were already under a lot of pressure due to poor performances. But as there is still a lot of time before their next series against the West Indies, which will start from 29 May 2025, ECB can take their time and announce a replacement and regroup the side for the next T20 World Cup, which will be played in India in 2026.
